How To Run Multiple Blogs From A Single Installation
Posted by Mert Erkal on Feb 3, 2009 in WordPress | 6 commentsAs your blog grows and you want to extend your blog network, you may decide to launch other blogs. You could run each blog with their own WordPress installations. However, thanks to WordPress MU you can run multiple blogs from a single installation. WordPress MU makes running a blog network on a single domain.
WordPress MU lets an unlimited number of blogs to run off one installation. The best of all, these blogs operate completely independently of each other. They can use different settings and themes at the same time. The admin can decide which plugins to install, and can give different permissions to different users.
WordPress MU is ideal for:
- Magazines and newspapers see Le Monde.
- For universities, see Harvard.
- Blog networks (create your own if you haven’t done already!)
- Specific and niche blog hosts, see Edublogs
How To Install WordPress MU
- Go to http://mu.wordpress.org/download/
- Unzip the package, and upload the folder to your hosting account.
- Read the Readme.txt file carefully, and start the installation.
However, If you’re not comfortable with PHP code editing, or dealing with a complex web server, then you shall not do the installation by yourself. Hire a freelance WordPress expert or ask a friend of yours who knows WordPress better than you in order to manage the installation.

Thank you erkal, this is really new knowledge to me.
Hi, Firstly I was very new to the word “Blog”. Then slowly I realized that almost every site that I visited had this feature. Was collecting information on what Blog was all about and then also got to know that a lot of money is made on the internet through this feature. Now Erkal, your information on how to open multiple blogs at the same time is a great asset. Thanks a lot.

Hi Erkal,
I have a couple domains that use MU. I use them primarily for affiliate marketing because you can really throw them up in a hurry (takes less than 2 minutes to set each niche up) or to test a keyword for volume (long tail).
There are some things that a webmaster needs to make MU work though. If you can’t use the Wild Cards feature in cPanel, you are pretty much sunk.
I had to actually ask the guys at host gator to enable it for me. Anyway, just a heads up.
Thanks for such a great information.
I accept it via Paypal or Bank Transfer. They are your clients so obviously you will have to manage the payment processing yourself. I thinks so.
