Don’t Forget to Backup Your WordPress Blog!
Posted by Mert Erkal on Dec 6, 2007 in WordPress | 5 commentsImagine one morning you wake up and start your computer to write your best post (this is my never-ending dream!) while drinking your coffee. You open your favorite browser, and prepare to log-on to your WordPress admin panel.
All of a sudden you realize that there is something wrong. You completely lost all your posts, Plugins, received comments. The outcome of hundreds of hours of dedication and hard work has gone!
Don’t worry; as i mentioned at the beginning it is just a dream, or a wake up call for those of you who has never backed up his/her WordPress blog before.
One of the things i love about WordPress as a blogging platform is Plugins. They extend the functionality of WordPress significantly. There are thousands of Plugins available to fix your WordPress problems.
When you face with a problem related to WordPress, just name the problem, and then search Google’ Blog Search. In our case, type “How to back up WordPress” in the search form.
I use below Plugin to back up my WordPress since the beginning.
WP-DB-Backup Plugin
You can easily download the latest version of WP-DB-Backup. Here’s the instructions and FAQ on using it. This backup will save the backup file to your web-host by default. You can also configure it to receive backup copies of your blog via e-mail. Please do not close your browser when it is processing.
Don’t forget to backup your WordPress blog regularly. The amount of time you will spend in a month will be less than building your blog from scratch.

WP backup plugin is useful but doesn’t backup everything. So you may want to consider using your cpanel to generate backup for the entire site. Check out our posting at http://www.atomicbloggingsecret.com/blogging-tips/backup-your-files
Hey Mert,
Thanks for this and for the links. I have told myself to do something for some time now but I recently read and implemented ZTD and this was a top priority. I got this in my feed reader today, so you are stumbled and I am well informed. Thanks.
I do have backup plugin installed, and I backup weekly.
Another tip to ensure you don’t screw up your blog is to install a dummy blog and test your plugin there before installing it in your actual blog.
@f4bloggers: thanks for this great post. You are absolutely right.
@Bruce : i am glad that you are well informed. Thank you so much for the Stumble.
@Saedel: thanks my friend, it is indeed a good idea. In addition to your comments, maybe one day WordPress can warn us about the latest updates of the plugins we installed. As you probably know, every 2-3 months, there are new releases.
GOod to know. I am getting ready to switch over to wordpress. Blogger just got rid of the URI field for commentors. That is unacceptable. Their big solution was OpenID.
