Until this year personal blogging used to be the only way to communicate with your friends on the Internet. However, the information overload forced us to find alternative communication ways, and microblogging was born. Bloggers use microblogging sites like Twitter to socialize with each other.

What Is Microblogging?

Microblogging is a new form of communication in which users can describe their current status in short posts distributed by email, instant messages, mobile phones, or the Web. The most popular microblogging tool is Twitter. The popular social network site Facebook also has a microblogging feature, called “status update”.

FriendFeed is a supplementary microblogging site which in reality is a social aggregator.  It consolidates the updates from social networking and social media websites such as blog entries, social bookmarking websites, and microblogging updates. Twhirl is a desktop client for cross connection between microblogging sites like Twitter, Friendfeed, identi.ca, or seesmic.

What is Lifestreaming?

Lifestreaming is a new way of sharing the activities happening in your life with your friends and readers. The activities are documented using a chronologically-ordered collection of information. According to Word Spy, “lifestreaming” is:

“An online record of a person’s daily activities, either via direct video feed or via aggregating the person’s online content such as blog posts, social network updates, and online photos.”

Some bloggers use lifestreaming as their main content for their blogs. There are very popular ones such as Jullia Allison. Her blog merely consists of collection of her photos, videos, random thoughts, copy-and-pasted emails, and links. Her site even scrolls horizontally to make it look like a timeline.

Add Lifestreaming Into Your Daily Blogging

Julia Allison’s blogging style may not be suitable for your daily blogging needs. However, you may still want to post daily updates about your life, services, products on your blog. If you have a WordPress blog, you can add lifestreaming into your daily blogging with these innovative WordPress plugins:

Hey Mert, sweet action bro! Another useful post my friend. It’s amazing to see the changes caused my information overload. Twitter becoming more widespread. Microblogging is taking off! :)

Feedback Secrets November 19th, 2008

I hadn’t really heard of life-streaming blogs until I read this post. I had yet to come across any blogs that used a Plurk style time-line to display posts. Interesting!

Great post here, Mert.

I had started using Twitter a few weeks ago, and it’s one of the best ways to “microblog”. It’s fun too. :)
