Blogging Wars - WordPress Vs Blogger

By Mert Erkal in WordPress

There’s a war going on in the blogosphere, and it has nothing to do with bloggers dissing each other on their respective websites. The war is about control of the blogosphere by several great, many good, and tons of terrible blogging platforms. The average newbie now has “too many” options to choose from, and the battle for blogging supremacy is hotter than ever.

At my website and blogs, I’m always asked the question “Is Wordpress better than Blogger?”. The answer, of course, is “Yes”. But to really understand why, it’s important to look at both blogging platforms side-by-side and see which one you really need.

Here’s the comparison scale:

1) Ease of Set-up And Use

Yes, it’s much easier to set-up a blog with Blogspot.com and get your own Bloggger account. You can be done in 10 minutes flat. Once you’re set-up you can start posting immediately. If you want to add a designer’s touch to your blog, there are also tons of blogger templates available for free.

Installing Wordpress however can be a major headache if you don’t know what you’re doing. Since you’re going to host it on your own account, you’ll need to download the installation files, upload them to your server, set-up a database, and run the configuration script.

However, if you know which hosting account to get, you can choose one with Cpanel included. With Cpanel, you can do a one-click installation, upgrade and removal of your Wordpress platform.

2) Customization & Advanced Use

Blogger doesn’t allow categories. You can’t sort your articles into different focuses, unless you know how to hack the platform. With Wordpress, not only can you add categories, you can also display each category differently on your main page. In fact with the correct plugins you can even turn your Wordpress into a magazine-like portal.

Publishing with Blogger can be a pain in the ass. It can take forever to post articles, especially if you’re making changes to the entire website. With Wordpress, publishing is much faster, although if you load your system with all kinds of bells and whistles it can be just as frustrating. With a Blogger account, you can get additional features like “Shout Boxes” that improve interaction on your site. You can also get pretty themes and nifty little tools that you can add to the core template files. However, that’s as far as you can go with Blogger.

With Wordpress however, the sky is the limit. As cliche as that may sound, not only can you get themes, additional “plugins” and advanced tools, you can also extend Wordpress to far beyond just a blogging platform.
The talk today is about using Wordpress as a complete, user-friendly Content Management System or CMS.

4) Copyrights and Ownership of Content

I started with Blogger and I won’t say that it’s bad. But after a while I started to get frustrated with Blogger, and here’s why: Google Owns Your Content

Google has the authority to shut down your account without warning if they don’t like what you’re blogging about. You don’t have absolute control over your own blog. With Wordpress, you own the domain name and the blog is hosted on your own account. You have full control over your content.

With the self-hosted version of Wordpress (not Wordpress.com), you’re free to write about anything you want, and use the software in any way you want. Yes, Blogger allows you to publish to your own domain, but they still own the database that holds your content! Don’t forget that!

5) Search Engine Optimization and Traffic

There’s this propaganda that since Google owns Blogger, they tend to favor Blogger accounts. I won’t say that this is illogical, but from my experience, there’s no such favoritism.

I’ve heard as many stories of getting indexed fast and ranking high in search engines from both Wordpress and Blogger users. As long as the content is good, the spiders will come.

When you post in Blogger, you can only “ping” a limited amount of sites, whereas with Wordpress on your own domain you can ping as many blog directories as you want, and start getting more traffic.

As a conclusion, I would say that Wordpress is only slightly ahead in terms of optimization for search engines, and building large amounts of traffic.

6) Money-Making Potential

There’s no doubt that it’s easier to get started with Google Adsense if you have a Blogger account. In fact you can now apply for Adsense from within a Blogger account. Not entirely surprising considering the fact that both are owned by the same company.

With Wordpress, it can get tricky. The default installation is not enough. You’ll need a couple of plugins and even a better theme to really maximize the Adsense potential. However, this seems to be getting easier and there’s even “Adsense revenue sharing” plugins around that allow you to share ad revenue with other contributors and writers for your blog.

When you start using Wordpress to build your Adsense websites, you’ll soon discover what I mean. It’s something you need to experience for yourself. I can tell you one thing though – when you go Wordpress, you don’t go back.

Meanwhile, if you have decided to switch to WordPress, yet do not know where to start please consider Alex Sysoef’s Expert WordPress program. The good thing about the program is that a custom script does the full blog configuration and customization based on a few answers you provide on web page and you got a clear winner. But you really must see the video that shows you entire process to understand just how simple it is. Watch the video Expert WordPress to see how anyone can create a blog in less than 4 minutes from Start to Publish.

Now, it is your turn. Have your say and please tell me which Blogging platform do you prefer ?

While I agree that Blogger is much quicker and easier, I definitely think that Wordpress is a more diverse and flexible program in the long run. You can literally use Wordpress to host your entire website if you take the time to customize it to fit your preferences. Blogger is just limited there. Also, I prefer reading wordpress based blogs because too many Blogger Blogs only allow comments from other Blogger members. Wordpress is much more open. Thanks for the interesting article!

All great points Merkal. I have a blogger account and my own wordpress on my own host. I prefer wordpress but just blogger as a private journal, which I think it’s perfectly fine for that purpose.

The main SEO advantage of Blogger is that most of the templates are so simple. Many WordPress themes are poorly designed for SEO purposes and, if one isn’t careful, content can be filtered as duplicate.

Dale March 11th, 2008

If you’re new to blogging, go to http://www.moguling.com way better than Blogger and MUCH, MUCH easier than Wordpress.

Gizmo March 11th, 2008

I have two WP blogs and one Blogger blog. I like the way blogger handles photo uploading much more than WP. In WP it is tedious having to first go through Flickr if you want total control of the photo. However all things considered, WP is superior. I wish they would make some things easier tho’.

Mel March 11th, 2008

I now have 3 sites on Blogger and am very pleased with it. I tried Wordpress for a while and found it VERY difficult to work with. The templates are locked down tight. It is near impossible to make changes.

On Blogger I was able to get a really nice 3 column template with almost limitless editing capabilities. All that is needed is some rudimentary coding knowledge. I was able to change category (yes I said CATEGORY) names and add categories.

In addition, Wordpress seems to have a limit of 300 links per post and Blogger has no such artificial restrictions.

My main site is http://mondaymorningpower.blogspot.com

The examples of the category changes and the look changes can be seen on my two new sites. (Keep in mind that they are still under construction.)

In addition, I found that Blogger allows me to subscribe to a single comment feed on a post that I choose and not on the entire blog. I was just looking to subscribe to the comment feed on this post, and surprise, surprise, I can’t.

Blogger - flexible with easy to use features
Wordpress - restrictive with hard to use features

I started with wordpress.com not org and found it hard to set up being new to blogging and the internet at the time, but they have a lot more to offer on both .com and .org. While blogger is easier for non-technical users, it is limited in what you can do. It is also cumbersome leaving all your login information everytime you want to leave a comment. I’ve also experienced that google would rather disable adsense accounts than pay their bloggers.

ManoDogs March 11th, 2008

I have several Blogger blogs and a couple WP blogs. As noted, WP can be very frustrating, even if you DO know what you are doing. While Blogger is simpler, I agree that Google controls the content, but they do not “own” it; while they can shut down your account and so forth, you hold the copyright to your intellectual property and can do with it as you wish - even under Creative Commons licensing.

I am now experimenting with integrating Blogger blogs into my website, much like a CMS, and while I know WP can handle it better, I just could not commit to that level of time and effort. If I had a whole design team, I agree that WP is better at handling this, but for a single-person operation, there’s just no way any one person could integrate WP into their site and still manage it in a timely fashion.

Unless they used WP as the whole site - an entire CMS operation.

Good post!

Ramvie March 12th, 2008

I have both Blogger and wordpress. It is easier to work on blogger rather than wordpress, but I like wordpress more because the designs of the templates are more elegant than blogger’s templates.

Yes, this is wordpress.com, Merkal ment Wordpress.org where you have ease to chaneg the templates.

Lynda Lippin March 12th, 2008

I have t go with blogger on this one. Blogger let’s you categorize, has plenty of plugins, allows for full editing of your html including adding outside scripts. And it takes a lot of badness to get booted from Google (witness the crap that stays on YouTube).

I think it comes down to technical knowledge and what you want to do with a site. If you plan on eventually making money, you are going to need some control.

If I had the time, I would dump Wordpress and use Drupal like Tim over at Yimto.com. A Drupal site is a blank site that you can create anything out of. It just takes a while, but once it is done, you have what you want instead of 454 plugins that do partially what you want.

I have seem a few high traffic blogs on Blogger but for the most part I see Blogger as training wheels.

So Wordpress was my second choice

Hi..Mert Erkal

Simple Mindz March 13th, 2008

I started out with Blogger, but when they changed all the formats around, I somehow found wordpress! I use to have free accounts with WP, but then upgraded all my sites so I could edit the way I wanted.
I also did not like the way blogger was owned by google.

narissa March 14th, 2008

Blogger is a good platform for those who are deficient with programming and other complicated thingies in blog setting.

Wordpress is for technical people, those who are well equipped to make those complicated blog settings.

One Eighteen March 14th, 2008

I am a hardcore Blogger, umm blogger but I didn’t know that Google owned my content. I might have to switch over now because I’ll be damned if somebody that is not me shuts down my blog.

Mert, you have forgotten one main reason to chose self-hosted WordPress rather than self-hosted Blogger: with WP you simply paste your post on the editor and, wham! it’s published. Whereas with Blogger you must use Bloggers control panel to paste your post, and wait for it to FTP it to your domain, and beware of errors. It can take hours.
I had a self-hosted Blogger blog for a year, and I know what I am talking about… :(

Wordpress Rocks.

I agree with eclubstyle; Wordpress is very customizable and has lots of plugins available and under development worldwide.

Thanks for all advise everyone, I have been chewing on which route to go for a few days now and I have many sites I want to do and already having a hosting company that provides cpanel and fantasico makes me think I should definitely go with wordpress. Though I might use blogger for some smaller ideas I have so I don’t have to pay for a domain name on those.

Thanks again everyone!

TheAdsenseConsultant May 4th, 2008

Actually I’m a little bit confused after reading your post because I thought that adsense ads weren’t allowed on a Wordpress blog. I just posted a blog entry about that - am I wrong?

Can you have adsense ads on Wordpress?

Mert Erkal May 6th, 2008

@TheAdsenseConsultant: If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog, it is allowed (like my blog). Yes, you can have adsense ads on WordPress.

All blogging sites have their pros and cons. For newbies, you can try blogger and other simple blogging sites like wordpress.com sites. My first blogger account http://www.topspeakersonline.blogspot.com is now a short description post, for more, the readers can go to my wordpress blog.
If you have programming knowledge then it’s best to start a wordpress.org blog. Cheers to blogging!

no doubt - wordpress dot org is my favorite platform.

I tried blogger before and it’s a joke for a pro blogger compared with self-hosted platform.

The commercial one (wordpress.org) do not allow you make money off your blog - so I’d pick the org version for this reason alone.

Archit October 16th, 2008

A very nice article I must say.

I have been blogging for 4 years now and I take both Blogger and Wordpress the best in their own ways. Blogger provides free Sutom Domain service, Wordpress charges for it. Wordpress provides better content management, blogger lacks behind in this feature. There are many more differences.

Also you said “Yes, Blogger allows you to publish to your own domain, but they still own the database that holds your content! Don’t forget that!” - I would like to enlighten you with the information that Blogger also provides FTP publishing although you have to login from the blogger.com control panel to publish contents.

Cheers!

Morgan Coudray October 19th, 2008

Great article! I just started using Blogger and as pointed out the frustration comes from the fact that I cant categorize my posts!

Gina October 26th, 2008

I have tried both platforms and found wordpress a bit difficult to use. However blogger is very easy.

It’s all about your own level of creativity. I managed to alter any free template and personalize it with my own headers and I get add my own domain name without paying for monthly hosting fees. Just a one shot $10.00 fee for domain name.

Why worry about all the other stuff. I can easily create several websites add loads of content and affiliate links and I am set. Really this was the easiest sorce of income for me and no one can tell its a blogger site.

Its all in how you think and see things

Liyan October 30th, 2008

To me WordPress is and alway will be MUCH EASIER!!! I like the admin layout and I will never switch back to Blogger, even if my content depended on it.

Linn November 17th, 2008

I use wordpress and will be using for a long time.. yes, my main concern with blogger is, ur blog can get deleted anytime..

and it’s not so difficult to use wordpress too.. i know wordpress takes more time and input, but it’ good in long term.

there’s not really a war between them, but my suggestion is, start with blogger, but we should eventually use wordpress when you are familiar with blogger..

besides, u can get ur old data from blogger to wordpress when u want to transfer the data.

nice read.. cheers

blogger is easy for newbies & wordpress gives u ultimate flexibility & control as pro. so the common trend is that people start with blogger & then move to wordpress.
we cannot deny anyone’s importance!
