Sometimes we feel that we have to do big things in blogosphere to stand out from the crowd, and make a difference. However in my experience i found that it is the little things that we do on a consistent basis that are usually the most powerful.
My Blogging History
I started blogging in 2006. It was just a hobby at the beginning, but then i started to realize that it could be my dream job. Why? Because i like writing, thinking, creating, and then share with others by heart.
As the months go by, i started to see that my role in blogosphere is to learn every bit of information about blogging, keep track of the latest developments, and then share it with others through my blog.
On the other hand, i realized that generating traffic and creating personal exposure have always been the most difficult things for small bloggers. Therefore i started to think about the answer to one question : How can i help small bloggers to stand out from the crowd that will eventually stand me out from the crowd?
The Story of Bloghology
Bloghology was a very simple, yet creative idea. I must admit it was a bit risky. Because it was the first attempt. There was no such document i could inspire from. But my passion for standing out from the crowd was so powerful that i decided to bear that risk.
However i had no idea how to convince bloggers to participate in Bloghology. I was just another blogger for most of the bloggers.
I thought it could be easier to show them what was in it for them, and how Bloghology could add value to their blogging. Therefore i wrote 2007 Bloghology by Search For Blogging & Peopleized.com as an announcement to my community and blogosphere.
In the announcement i tried to respond every possible question. I showed them the values, and the benefits. I also informed them about the guidelines and the timeline.
I knew that single announcement was not enough to spread the word for such a big event. Thus i used every single opportunity to spread the word. I used StumbleUpon, Digg, Blog Catalog, MyBlogBlog, Blogging Zoom etc.
Until today that announcement post received 50 comments. Bearing in mind my blog’s traffic and popularity at that moment, 50 comments was a great number!
I was very happy when my efforts paid off and i started to receive participation requests from bloggers all around the globe. I was much more motivated.
In the end, there were around 25 participating bloggers. Their profiles, interviews, photos etc were to be compiled as a PDF e-book. I was the only person managing the project.
How could i finish Bloghology while working in a full time job?
I had to use my time as efficient as possible. Compilation of Bloghology was a tough period for me, but the outcome was perfect. During the project i learnt a lot of things about writing an e-book, organizing a group of smart bloggers to spread the word. Plus i learned a lot of things from the participating bloggers. They were simply awesome. I felt lucky to work with them.
How Did I Increase the Impact of Bloghology?
- We formed a Google group with the participants of Bloghology. We still discuss how to promote it. You can not even imagine how effective such a group can be if you have great bloggers as members.
- I created a landing page at Squidoo. Here you can find it : Bloghology Squidoo
- I created a Blog Catalog group called Bloghology, and invited all my friends.
- I created a Facebook group called Bloghology. If you have a Facebook profile, you are also kindly invited to join by clicking on Facebook Bloghology
- I have great blogger friends. They have written testimonials on Bloghology. You can find their names and comments in the 2007 Bloghology.
- Ilker Yoldas, from the Thinking Blog (www.thethinkingblog.com) has designed buttons for easy download of Bloghology. I kindly requested all participants and interested bloggers to add these buttons into their blogs. This has helped me spread the word Bloghology easily.
- I customized my RSS feeds via Feedburner so that my subscribers can find a link to download Bloghology. This small addition increased the number of downloads significantly. I will address this later in my blog so that you can customize your RSS feeds for your own purpose.
All in all, i spent hours and hours when compiling Bloghology e-book. It took one month for me to start and finish the project. Without dedication and hardworking, it is almost impossible to manage such a project.
In the end, as you stand out from the crowd and see the positive impact, you forget all those painful hours and start enjoying your increasing traffic and popularity.
Now my suggestion to you is to slow down your daily blogging routine and spend sometime on thinking about your answer to this question: how can you add value to bloggers and stand out from the crowd ?
