Tips On Writing A Successful Blog Post
Posted by Mert Erkal on Dec 26, 2008 in Blogging | 9 commentsSome might say the headlines are the most important aspect of your blog posts. The others say content is much more important compared to blog headlines. Even if you write a killer headline, you still need to write something that adds value to your readers in the body of your post. Otherwise most of your first time visitors will never come back to your blog. Here are a few good tips for writing a successful blog post:
- Share your experiences as generously as possible. People will recognize them, and depend on your knowledge.
- Write short posts. Even if there are some popular bloggers like Steve Pavlina who never write less than 700 words, you should know that your readers have so little attention span. On the other hand you are not Steve Pavlina. 300-400 words articles are pretty good.
- Use lists. Your readers will catch the most important parts of your posts easily.
- Write timeless posts. They should not become outdated in a year.
- Announce breaking news; always try to be the first one.
- Learn, read, write. Until you become the expert in your field.
- Write good posts which people would like to ready and share with their friends.
- Limit your paragraphs with 6-8 sentences. It makes reading a lot easier.
- Never forget making a spellcheck before posting.
- Post one article each day. This is not only good for increasing your readers, but also yours will become a VIP blog in the eyes of Google.
These are my tips on writing a successful blog post. Now it is your turn. Please tell me your tips on writing a successful blog post.

Hi Erkal, Its good to know that you have left your day job to become a full time blogger. Congratz.
Yes, I do agree with most of your points. As you said, apart from one article per day, it will be good if we post one lengthy research based article at least once in a week.
Nice list Mert. I especially like the ‘timeless posts’ tip. I need to work on that. I use a different method than ‘one article each day’. I try to write two or three posts then give visitors time to comment before the posts get buried. Once I get real popular that wont be necessary. Just between you and me I run short on time a lot too
Happy new year.
Idea for a blog topic for a dummy. I would like to know how you do that short article and a place to store your rest of the story. Where do you store the rest of your links. What kind of link is this? How to would be great as mine are always long.!
thanks
jo
Your blog is very nice.
Thanks.
Mert, this is a nice summary – I especially like spell-check. I want to add to that the use of correct grammar and proper English. I turn away from blogs that may have great content but the writer refuses to learn the simple difference between say “its” – possessive pronoun and “it’s” – contraction for -it is – subject/verb. Did we not learn this in 3rd grade or earlier? Respect the English language and write polished content. (And I am not English major – I am an electrical engineer by degrees). Thanks again!
Its a very nice blog.
Thanks.
I enjoy reading your blog, and have had a link to it on the front page of my blog( http://www.newlifefinancial.org/ ) for some time.
Thank you.
