How To Get Some .edu Link Love

Many bloggers and webmasters believe that just because a domain has a .edu extension it will provide more powerful backlinks. According to Google, the power of the backlinks from a .edu site comes from their trust on the website, and  high value content on the domain. Having some authority backlinks from .edu sites will definitely help your blog’s search engine rankings. Here’s a quick way to generate as many .edu backlinks as possible.

All you need is to perform below searches in Google, and when you find a .edu forum or blog, post to it with your signature which will create a link back to your blog. You are done!

  • “desired keyword phrase” “powered by wordpress” site:.edu
  • “desired keyword phrase” blog site:.edu
  • “desired keyword phrase” “powered by phpbb” site:.edu
  • “desired keyword phrase” “powered by movable type” site:.edu
  • “desired keyword phrase” “powered by vbulletin” site:.edu

Let me give you a few good examples. Try searching “make money” one in Google:

“make money” “powered by wordpress” site:.edu > this will bring you thousands of blogs and websites

“make money” “powered by phpbb” site:.edu > this will bring you many forums powered by phpbb

Identify the blogs or forums that you can contribute with your comments. Spend 10-15 minutes everyday on these blogs. Your blog will  have so many powerful backlinks from the authority sites which will eventually help your blog rewarded by Google.

  1. You’re wrong buddy. Google has made it clear in their last webmaster central live chat session that .edu and .gov domains has the same weightage as any other site on the net as far as outbound links is considered, no special preference. I remember it clearly as I was one among those crowd propping up questions there.

May be this is the reason why they might have made it equal, that any crappy site can now have .edu.

  2. Hi Mert,

Excellent information it’s ironic i was speeking to a friend re exact same subject about a week ago. However it was a worthwhile reminder reading your post as he was raving about this tactic.

    Regards

  3. Another nice one Mert. I tried “internet marketing” “powered by wordpress” site:.edu and found some pretty cool blogs. I found a couple with almost no updated content and no comments that still carry a PR4 or 5 even on the blog post page. I guess they get to keep their page rank just by the association they have with the main site which in these cases were universities.

  6. @Raj: On theory, you are right. but on practice you are not. Why? Yes, edu, gov, com, net and in fact any other domain might carry the same backlink value. But how is the backlink value determined?

Most edu sites have millions of pages indexed with so many backlinks pointing to them. As a result, edu sites become authority. Therefore, getting a related backlink from an edu site might be more valuable than getting a similar link from a com site.

I know, there are so many factors to calculate the value of backlinks, but many backlink builders still value the .edu and .gov links higher than a regular .com link.

As soon as the backlink is coming from a relevant and quality source, I say, go for it !

  7. I enjoy reading your blog. I will keep visiting on your post often. Thanks for the information.

  8. Your “powered by wordpress” site:.edu tip has a massive hole in it – 99% of wordpress blogs are nofollow. When i'm working on my sites trying to build links, if I even suspect the target site is wordpress i deem it a waste of time and close it.

.edu and .gov links might be worth twice as much as regular links, but they're also much harder to get and keep. There is so much moderation, admin approval and nofollow to get through.

Here is a tip that's been working for me – search for forums "Powered by SMF 1.1.4" in google. These forums are easy to join, can rank as high as PR 5 and do not have nofollow tags on messages.
