Dramatic Changes in Alexa Rankings
Posted by Mert Erkal on Apr 17, 2008 in Blog, Making Money Online | 12 commentsThis morning while I was checking my blog’s dashboard, I noticed that there was a drastic drop in my blog’s Alexa Ranking. Last midnight it was 80,000 something and after 8 hours I saw it as 121,233.
I was surprised, but I thought it was another wrong Alexa update. While I was looking forward a correction, I read this post on Problogger Alexa Announces ‘New’ Rankings
Sadly, I must accept that 121,233 is my new Alexa Ranking. You can read the official announcement from Alexa here The New Alexa Rankings
On the other hand, after having read the announcement now I think that this change was necessary for the sake of better rating. In the long run I can benefit from that too.
In the short term it may effect make money online blogs negatively, because most of the direct advertisers/sponsors are very serious about Alexa rankings.
How about your blogs? Have you noticed drastic changes in your blogs Alexa rankings? How is it going to effect your monthly online income ?

Yeah, I noticed it also this morning when I was awake! At first I scared a bit, but then I realised that they had a new ranking system!
It’s a good change for an unknown blogger like me. Finally I managed to get out of the million crowd and in 900,000 range! Nothing compare to yours..
Is the ranking more reliable now than it was before? My ranking got updated too.
My movie site rank jumped from 900,000 to 656,000. So i am pretty impressed with what Alexa did with their system.
I just left John Chow’s blog and the commenters are saying that Alexa, Technorati and Google PR don’t mean anything anymore and not to worry about it.
Hello my Friend!
In my opinion Alexa rank is wrong in many causes!
Foe example my blog http://receptizdravahrana.blogspot.com New Alexa rank is 2 millions and something and when i ask Alexa support for the reason they
explain me that my blog have a very good visit/more than 900 page loads a day/ but my visitors came mainly from one country in this case Croatia and that is the mane reason why my Alexa rank is not good!
My other blog http://stanka.bravejournal.com have very good Alexa rank 38.123 but I only have about 250 page loads a day with that blog!
Who have right Google or Alexa?I think Google have a better system for ranking!
Have a nice Day and Regards from Croatia
Mine is increased from 370k to 310k, quite happy bout it, but the percentage of the readers change quite drastic… I used to have a high percentage of readers from Malaysia, and now it drops a lot. Alexa also shows users and traffic from fewer country as well.
Not that I have an active blog, but my website gained quite a bit lately. Your post triggered me looking at it, cause last time I checked my Alexa ranking was probably some time in March. And it was around 250,000 back then, and got to almost 150,000 now
Nice to know
Thnaks, Misha
Mine increased, after weeks of steady decline, which I thought at the time stupid!
@Mark: I am glad yours has increased. You deserve it. Congratulations!
@Debo: I am glad to hear that. Thanks!
@Tom: It is too early to comment at this moment.
@Sherxr: Congratulations!
Even my website’s ranking dropped, though by couple of thousands only.

Strangely, we are seeing a consistent increase in the number of unique visitors through Statcounter.com, the changes in Alexa ranking are slightly dis-aligned.
Wondering, how to make our visitors install Alexa Tool bar!!!
