Buy Old Domains with PageRank To Make Money Online

By Mert Erkal in Blog, Making Money Online

Making Money Online

Buying old domains with PageRank is one of the easiest ways of making money online as long as you have some money in your pocket. I have been planning to buy an old domain with PageRank quite long time. Finally I have bought buzz4me.com (PageRank 3) by joining an online bid at GoDaddy with a surprisingly low $30 price.

Before telling you my future plans about buzz4me.com, let me step by step tell you how I bought this domain:

  • There are certain websites where you can keep track of old/expired domains. I found two reliable websites you can refer for this purpose. One is Register Compass, and the other is GoDaddy.
  • I suggest you to start with one day membership of Register Compass for $3.75. You will find thousands of old/expired domains inside this website. Also you can filter them by their PageRank and place your bid as a member of the website.
  • In my case, buzz4me.com was parked at GoDaddy therefore Register Compass directed me to GoDaddy’s website where I can place my bid and wait for final results. Note that you still need to be a registered member of GoDaddy to place your bid under Domain Auctions menu.
  • Luckily my bid was the highest, therefore I won the bid!

Not every old/expired domain name has potential to grow. When you check Register Compass and GoDaddy’s Domain Auctions menu you will find many odd domain names. Be as selective as possible when you are bidding for a domain name. Always think about the future when buying an old domain.

Buzz4me.com – Future Plans

I imagined buzz4me as a place for bloggers/website owners who are willing to have some buzz for their content and services. You will say buzz 4 me, and I will buzz for you!

PR News, contest announcements, service announcements, and many more will be welcomed to buzz4me.com. Also I will be writing product reviews there. In the long run I also hope to make some money online with paid reviews over there.

Currently I am trying to find a good magazine type WordPress theme for buzz4me.com. I will update you about the progress through my blog. You can also subscribe to my RSS feed and follow the updates via your RSS reader.

This website uses IntenseDebate comments, but they are not currently loaded because either your browser doesn't support JavaScript, or they didn't load fast enough.

It certainly is a good way to make money and certainly needs some initial investment. I would also like to add that while purchasing any domain in bidding process, we must look back into the domain history ( whois history ) and its previous owners traces. Sometimes, a domain tagged as spammer or something like that may cause immense trouble for the new buyer.

@Rajeev: Thanks a lot for mentioning this Rajeev!

You can even obtain .ca domains at auction, they are auctioning off some from June 5 to June 12 http://domaintalkblog.com/2008/06/11/ca-auction-june-5th-to-12th/

Sherif June 12th, 2008

Great tip Mert!

It might be a good start when someone want to save the time to spend on increasing page rank.

Mert Erkal June 12th, 2008

@Sherif: Like me Sherif, i don’t know but my PR is 0 since 6 months, it used to be PR3, it should be around PR4-5 with 900 backlinks. So i need to diversify my portfolio to minimize the risk. Soon i am leaving my full time job to make money from blogging.

Rhys June 12th, 2008

Hope you follow through with the updates on this one Mert!

There are some good ones around, but you need to work to find them, and the biggest trap is that a lot of high PR domains are actually fake because of being redirects to high PR sites.

If you can post PR news for the authors on my blog, I can definitely advertise your site.

Mert-

While the domain still shows a PR-3, it will not likely stay this way once the new content is added and Google does a new update.

The Google bot is going to come back around and wonder where all the original content went and why it’s changed completely.

Very useful article. I will try my luck with it. :)

I know a company that decided to rename their website. Things were good with the new name for a little while and then. Another company started getting top returns even when searching for the first companies exact name.

Most of the companies business was by referral but even so people went to the web to find them. After the problem was discovered it took a couple of months to mitigate the situation.

There is a huge lesson for companies and the whims of the boss here.

This is something I look forward to learning in the future..

PR of Domain is lost once it gets expired, even if you grab a PR domain it is less usefull.
Do you know Google is a Domain registrar but Doesnot sells domains ?

Google has access to Registry Server , they can monitor the changes with the domains

your site now with PR0

Jimbob October 27th, 2009

Mert,
I've just checked buzz4me.com and it doesn't seem to have a page rank any more. Is this proof that you can't buy a domain with an existing page rank and expect to keep it? I'm thinking of doing the same for a completely unrelated business, but this makes me wonder if I should just start from scratch. What do you think, now that you've tried it for yourself? Thanks.

Alex January 9th, 2010

Interesting article. However, as mentioned earlier, buzz4me is now PR0. So is there a point in my buying old domains for their initial PR?

Two Way Radios January 27th, 2010

Thats great way getting a pagerank

Web Design March 1st, 2010

in reponse to Mert Erkal post, you could have 2000 links to your site and it still would remain a low page rank if the links come from low value pages, I could have a page rank 3 – 5 site in 6 months with 100 good links :)

sseo March 5th, 2010

you can buy aged domains not only on auctions it's also quite easy to get very good aged domains with many links, backlinks and traffic from the dropping domains you just need a good tool to quickly discovery – from appearing everyday thousands of dropping domains – the ones that has highest value and then try to catch them. I would recommend eXdomain (http://en.exdomain.eu) that's not too expensive and gives you extreme power for getting high value domains.

mike March 15th, 2010

I believe if you purchase a PR domain, once the ownership changes hands Google drops the links and rank. If this is not the case I would like to understand more how it works but unless you get it from the owner before it expires all the PR is lost. Just my 2 cents.
